Adventure Van Travels – South Dakota

Every time I road trip through South Dakota, I love it just a little bit more. The blue skies, the wind, the gorgeous scenery and the friendly people are just amazing.   After a short hike in Big Sioux Recreation Area, we took a quick side trip to Falls Park to see the Sioux Falls. This park is beautiful and we spent an hour or so exploring the area before hitting the road to travel through South Dakota.  We made our obligatory stops at Mitchell’s Corn Palace to see the huge corn murals and Wall Drug to fill up on doughnuts and 5 cent coffee. I love how a South Dakota road trip is broken up with fun things to do.   From Wall, we drove a long bumpy dirt road to Sage Creek campground in Badlands National Park where we stayed the night. These sites are primitive, so we picked up gallons of water and food for dinner from a grocery before heading into the park.

I LOVE this campground! There is a large open area surrounded by a parking circle and you are free to camp where you want. We were comfy sleeping in the van. Bison roam freely throughout the area and a prairie dog town is close by. Numerous bison trails lead through the hills to beautiful views. The stars are amazing and I woke up to a gorgeous sunrise over the prairie. If you have the chance to camp here, do it. It is awesome! And an added bonus is that it’s free to camp.

Looking forward to exploring this amazing park! Happy Travels.
