Oak Mountain State Park

Alabama’s Oak Mountain State Park

Dave and I just returned from a road trip to New Orleans (which was awesome by the way!) and I want to tell you about Oak Mountain State Park where we stopped for the night on the way down. It was late when we drove the winding road up to the park located just south of Birmingham not far from the interstate. I was happy to find a gated entrance with a 24 hour staff attendant at the park gate which made us feel safe in an unfamiliar area.Oak Mountain State ParkOnce inside the gates we drove a long wooded drive to the back of the park where the campsites are located. Oak Mountain State Park offers plenty activities for outdoor fun including hiking, camping, a playground, horse stables, mountain bike trails, an archery range, swimming, boating and golf. You could spend several days here and stay plenty busy.Oak Mountain State ParkOak Mountain State ParkThere were plenty of open camping spots since it was mid week when we arrived. But reservations are available to book online. (Click Here for more information.) The campground is large with 150 sites and the entire area was neat and clean. Heavily wooded, the changing leaves were beautiful. Oak Mountain State Park is convenient to Birmingham, while at the same time feeling remote and quiet which makes it a nice park to stop at for a quick night’s sleep or also to stay awhile for a mini vacation. If you go to Oak Mountain State Park:

Payment for campsites is due in cash. There is an ATM machine located at the main gate of the Oak Mountain State Park entrance.

Tent sites are walk in only, but the parking area is very close to the tent sites. The electric sites are a combination of back in and pull thru configurations.

Alabama is currently under a drought warning so fires are currently prohibited.

We really enjoyed staying at Oak Mountain State Park, even if only for the night. We are happy to have a convenient and pleasant place to stop when driving south and also looking forward to spending a bit more time there the next time we go. Happy Travels!
