Dave and I just returned from a road trip to New Orleans (which was awesome by the way!) and I want to tell you about Oak Mountain State Park where we stopped for the night on the way down. It was late when we drove the winding road up to the park located just south of Birmingham not far from the interstate. I was happy to find a gated entrance with a 24 hour staff attendant at the park gate which made us feel safe in an unfamiliar area.
If you go to Oak Mountain State Park:
Payment for campsites is due in cash. There is an ATM machine located at the main gate of the Oak Mountain State Park entrance.
Tent sites are walk in only, but the parking area is very close to the tent sites. The electric sites are a combination of back in and pull thru configurations.
Alabama is currently under a drought warning so fires are currently prohibited.
We really enjoyed staying at Oak Mountain State Park, even if only for the night. We are happy to have a convenient and pleasant place to stop when driving south and also looking forward to spending a bit more time there the next time we go. Happy Travels!
